I was born in Kentucky and reborn in Santa Cruz, California during the early 1970s. After a B.A. in English from Ohio State University, I joined the first graduate class in Literature at University of California, Santa Cruz, and fell in love with the redwoods, the fog, the seascape. Before the days when MFA programs became prevalent, I enrolled in a Ph.D. program to study the novel, thinking that studying the form might help me write one. I did write a novel that I never published and some short fiction (available on this site) before completing my degree and beginning a career as a college professor of American literature, where I continued to study–and teach–the novel.
In this next chapter of my life, I am in recovery from academic writing. Although you’ll find some of my favorite critical books and essays on this site, I’ve launched a new venture as a writer of critical nonfiction–and am working on a new novel. With luck, you’ll see the novel on this site before long.
